Photo Flurry 142: London Decadence

  • IMG_2905-600x400.jpg

After a day spent peacocking along the English coastline it was time to get back to civilization. I was excited to meet Cathy, an internet buddy whose acquaintanceship goes way back to the days of LiveJournal. She generously offered her place, setting up the most adorable little bedroom nest I’ve had the pleasure of seeing, complete with gourmet pillow chocolates and towels. The perfect place to lay down my weary, sun-drained bones. This was my birth month, and I was …

Photo Flurry 141: Summoning Storms on the English Coast

A few weeks ago I had an unusual modeling job. It was unusual for several reasons: I’m mostly working on art these days, it was to be shot entirely on instant film, the photographer is actually a writer, and the look requested was described as “dreamy” and “timeless” – a far cry from my usual repertoire. Also, it was to be set in England, where I hadn’t set foot since 2009, save for that brief visit in April. After a …

Style Dispatch 027: Dilly-dally

Every so often, usually following a week of too much work and caffeine, in my case, it happens: a day of absent-minded, stargazing laziness. Not a big deal when there isn’t much on the agenda, but when you’re up to your ears in To-dos, this state makes for one tough adversary. You need speed, decisiveness, resolve – and a near-effortless look that doesn’t impede any of the above. Derrrp. Air-dryed hair, minimal make-up and light layers will keep things simple …

Breathing Space at 512 hours

This post began as a literal description of 512 Hours, but I changed my mind halfway. I just returned from a weekend in London, where I spent four hours (split between two visits) at 512 Hours – the latest long-form Marina Abramovic performance (/event/experience). I first showed up at Serpentine Gallery on an uncharacteristically hot Saturday afternoon, having made my way past hundreds of swans, flower beds, and cyclists at Hyde Park. The walk to the gallery took almost an …

Photo Flurry 140: Ice Cream Tombstones at Glasnevin Cemetery

There are 1.5 million people buried at Glasnevin cemetery – that’s more Dubliners than there are alive today. Ireland’s historical giants and nameless cholera victims alike sleep the sleep of ages in this grassy sprawl, with Daniel O’Connell, Charles Stewart Parnell and Michael Collins among Glasnevin’s most famous residents. The history here is so rich and dense, it absolutely pays to take a tour with one of the guides – and almost two hours later, you’ll still have barely scratched …

Photo Flurry 139: In Francis Bacon’s Studio

  • IMG_1352-600x400.jpg

If gazing into an artist’s studio is akin to gazing into their soul, this goes triple for Francis Bacon’s. Transported to Hugh Lane in its entirety from the original London location at 7 Reece Mews, it’s kept behind glass, the tumult of creation preserved down to its vintage dust. This tiny space overrun with canvas, rags and endless paper clippings, feels almost too candid, even though Bacon himself received visitors there – by appointment only. Paint strokes on walls and …

Photo Flurry 138 – Sun-catching in Howth

Sometimes I just can’t do photo- justice to a perfect day. If I tried to document it adequately, I wouldn’t be able to fully experience it. Still, I’m glad I brought my camera along on mine and G’s day trip to Howth last weekend. Howth is a little fishing town neat Dubiln that was recommended to us by everyone from friends to the vegetable guy at the organic market, and now the weather agreed with them, too. Howth is full …

Style Dispatch 026 – Summer Bedouin

Ubiquitous too-tight cutoffs and highlighter crop tops trumpet its arrival. The muggy morning air corroborates their message. There’s no denying it: summer, my nemesis, is here again. As far as I’m concerned, getting tan, the sensation of being hot, and summer style can all go to hell. Ever notice how much better everyone looks when temperatures drop and the scarves, boots and coats come out? Summer is the opposite of that. If you’ve been following my fashion, you know that …

This post was commissioned by May Patreon raffle winner, Eric Berthelette. Big thanks to the entire Patreon crew for bringing so much within my reach! I love my Dublin neighborhood. The ten-minute walk to Phoenix Park, the IMMA literally across the street, the nearby canals – all of it feels tailor-made, nature and culture right at my doorstep. And right around the corner, a massive piece of history looms, foreboding and grey, drawing lines of tourists daily. Exterior of Kilmainham …

Roman Viktyuk and Salome’s Frenzy

Theater is a big deal in Russia. I was regularly brought to puppet shows, the ballet and plays as a kid. Sounds luxurious, but we were’t especially wealthy and this was pretty normal for the times. The performing arts were known, respected, televised – they were part of everyday life. And for better or worse, theater is still a dominant ingredient in Russia’s pop-culture cake. In addition to TV and music celebrity, stage celebrity remains a Big Deal in Russia, which …

Prismatic Glasshouses and Carnivorous Flowers

We’d been planning a trip to the National Botanic Gardens for months, and finally made it on Sunday, which is probably for the best, considering how beautiful of a day it was. The visit was a burst of inspiration for my Alien Botany project and a welcome afternoon of exploring prismatic glasshouses, climbing trees, honing Gašper’s photo-eye, lazying about on benches and being snazzy amidst the endless flowers, hills, and orchards. Traversing the tremendous, misty glasshouses in all that sun …

Alien Botany Gets Serious with Patreon

Last Monday, I launched a page on Patreon, focused largely around my ongoing Alien Botany project and this blog. I hadn’t made much noise about it online because I wanted to feel things out first, and so far it’s been an overwhelmingly positive and brain-tickling experience. As I say on the page, Patreon offers something that’s part old-school patronage we can actually afford and part art coven, with secret blogs, special stuff (like patrons-only Crystal Cat postcards) and occasional face …

A moment of snail-mail zen, brought to you by my dear friends Annah and Sam, whose surprise packages turned what was about to be a Very Annoying Monday into a wonderful day. Unbeknownst to my friends, I’d been in dire need of both skincare stuffs and a tote bag for my weekly trips to the organic market, and too busy to deal with either of these matters. Through the power of what I can only assume is serious comrade voodoo, …
