Time has come to work on new artstuff, which means two things: 1. I’ll be difficult to get a hold of [shush to groaning friends and relatives!]. 2. I’ve set up my work area for the foreseeable future. This process was a bit hasty and it all feels only half-baked, but it’s sufficient for my needs, providing a large, organized area in which to do my thing, with my silver drawing board up, magnets and dry-erase markers handy. I imagine that as time passes, personal touches and friends’ art will take up much of the space above this desk. For now though, this will git ‘er done.
I often hear that one’s workspace can say a lot about a person’s inner life. I’m not sure I buy it, but I am endlessly fascinated with others’ creative methods. Personally, I’ve never been able to work in a mess. I need all my tools to be easily accessible, and unless things are in what I consider order, nothing gets produced.
Do you draw your power from a chaos of books, scraps, and supplies, or do you color-code, label, and otherwise organize? A happy medium, perhaps? Whatever the case, pretty please share a few pictures of your workzone in the comments. I am a creepy voyeur and wanna see your STUFF. Now, on to mine.
Top: my new Drawing Party in Space pencil case. Above, a strand of crystals from a chandelier in a crumbling LA movie theater, a few pins and an octopus mirror by Stuntkid in Coilhouse plates. Below, necklace sets the mood for a current project.
Framed fly on a window sill from Lumi, tiny skulls, an old music box. Might be time replace the fly though, I’ve had it in the frame for what seems like ages.
I have a bowl of these little guys, my favorite people occasionally get one.
My forceps collection – there are more in the container, you just can’t see them.
That’s all for now. More office photos eventually, meanwhile remember to post pictures of your work area. Art sheep compels you!
I love seeing glimpses of your space, and the skulls are adorable !
The 1st and last photos are not showing up for me though.
Fixed, thank you!
I love what you did with the lamp and the photo. nice touches, my cubicle can use a few decorations : ]
This is what my workspace looks like at the office where I do freelance video editing. It is quite a mess. There is a giant open ladder next to the desk which you can’t see in this photo. http://twitpic.com/2ofuw9
My workspace isn’t functional right now, so it would be pointless to post pictures but it was awesome to see yours.
Are those tiny skulls hand carved from bone. I seem to do the same thing with bullets from my bullet belt. I leave a trail of bullets behind hah.
I work where I’m inspired. My command center or my coffee table.
It’s often lines from books or scenes from movies that make me want to create.
i love looking at other people’s work areas too! yours is looking pretty sweet so far.
i made a little set with mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/melissadominic/sets/72157624841045085/ complete with totally unnecessary notations.
Aww.. if I had daylight I would take more (and more interesting) pics, but this is all I can do holding my bedside lamp…

(my orchid isn’t dead… she’s just pretending!)
I love the art case, where did you find it?
My working space seems to be anywhere that the need strikes me. I don’t do anythin fancy with pens or the like, I’m only at the drawing with a pencil stage. Practicing and practicing so one day I can be an artist too! Some of my best ones have been done on friends couches without the use of a table, and sometimes I’ll sit down and have everything organised but fail to draw anything good! I’m sure as I progress this will change, and when I have my own place I’d like to set up a little art nest… But that’s my process for now!
I’ll for sure post photos at some point, right now it’s just either randomly sketching in my room or the living room coffee table. But our one roommate moved out so I’m hi-jacking it to be where all my art things go since they take up most of our room and the living room. Haha.
I love seeing other peoples work spaces too, I don’t een know why it’s so interesting, but it is. :3
Also, I lurve your pencil case. So freakin cute.
I love how you take pictures of your surroundings and as I am not so good with the camera my pic is more a straight on thing :-)

Love to see where other people create… I do have another workspace where I make clothes but it is also my kitchen so I avoided pictures there…
Brittany, hee – that ladder is the first thing I saw!
Jasmine, yep – the vintage skulls are, indeed, bone.
Private, same here. I get most of my daily work done on the couch, and most of my Coilhouse writing in bed. How many desks do you have in your command center?
Melissa, I really enjoyed looking through your pictures, thank you! Your book collection, as well as your lotion collection, are the stuff of legend. I look forward to my whole house being a little more lived in so I can document entire rooms.
Flo! That [chartreuse?] wall color is to die for. I love all the pencils, too. Very nice. My best wishes to your orchid.
Cyra, picked that up in Little Tokyo around here.
Vira, excellent. Adaptability is a valuable skill!
Nikki, I always find seeing new ways of brainstorming and organizing inspiring. Good luck with hijacking!
Paula, I love your photo wall!
I am the most moisturized bookworm on the planet :D
I always do what sheep tell me to do.. especially art sheep.. so here is my lovely disaster of a work space.

My desk… or the left end of it at least.
http://flic.kr/p/8BxA7Z
It is a long trestle table and the sewing machine and cutting board take up most of the other 2/3.
The cat food bowl is tucked in the corner as it is the only place my dog can’t get to it.
The small computer desk is to the right of this desk.
Two tables and a cheapo glass coffee table not pictured that holds all the supplies. (Crayons, paint, pencils, and tasty glue!)
I love a creatively ORGANIZED space, but need options, lots of supplies to have access to multiple projects. Not to mention needing to be “sensibly” stimulated to get in the zone. Sights, scents and sounds.

I love my wall, people think it’s crazy to have a “good day wall” but it makes me so incredibly happy thought I would send you the other side of the wall…

when you are creating do you find there is a certain mood you need to be in or do the creations reflect whatever your mood is at the time?
hmm I’m def a work in a mess kinda of person… hehe which actually fits me fine! Believe it or not in the pictures is it being pretty tidy.
