After a weekend of intense Coilhouse meetings and signing one thousand copies of Issue 05 with my esteemed co-editors Nadya and Mer, yesterday was for the chill things in life: a hike to the dog park, a trip to our favorite Korean BBQ place and watching Videodrome to the sound of exploding fireworks outside. Catching a redeye on Wednesday night to land in NYC at 6am the following morning. I’ve been there a handful of times, but, of course, there is always more to discover. I’ll leave the rest of this Photo Flurry light on words, except one pressing question:
What are your favorite things to do in New York City?
Please leave your answers in the comments section! Now, on to the photos.
The last of the Dark Arts Festival adventure coverage is now up on Chinashop. In gallery 04, we discover the dark art of cake-eating — unlike anything I’d ever seen. Click the graphic to read all about it.
Gallery 05 is my favorite of all, and documents the drive itself. I even did my own captions for this one, and it has over 80 images. Roadside stimulants, open road, and the omnipresent Big Boy Burger mascot [rivaled only by the Bun Boy].
The 800 thread count sheets my mom gifted us for our first wedding anniversary
Micron’s towering behind
Eggs over easy with Kalonji seed and black truffle salt
Pasta and Brussels sprouts salad with Parmesan and cracked black pepper
Me, ready for a jog. And a jig.

When I’m in New York without any real agenda, I usually like to get dropped off at a museum around Central Park and just spend the rest of the day wandering around on foot until I’m in, like, Little Italy. It’s an interesting way to find new places but it also means I don’t have a really solid top ten list. I guess, at some point or another, I tend to end up in…
Evolution.
UNIQLO.
Topshop.
Forbidden Planet.
Rice to Riches (there’s a Pinkberry next door so it’s a battle to decide if I want rice pudding or frozen yogurt; Rice to Riches usually wins).
New York Central Art Supply.
Strand bookstore.
Probably not terribly exciting or original suggestions but I like them enough to keep visiting on my wandering days.
Yaffa Cafe.
Brighton Beach.
Exploring the Lower East Side.
I’m big on bars- my favorites being Barramundi and if do it early, definitely check out Death and Company. The latter might be up your alley.
Have fun.
Momofuku !!noodle-bar! so yummy!

Evolution store! stuffed bunnies & bats !

the barking dog eatery and the young designers market sat morning outside old st patrick’s church
The Bourgeois Pig. You MUST go. Amazing wine, food, and ambience. Reasonably priced, too. Have fun!

When in NYC I love to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art…I could sit and knit in front of Singer Sargent’s Madam X for hours. Also it is always fun to hit up the alternative galleries.
Zoetica is nearing the east coast, how exciting!
Dancing and wandering are my most cherished of activities within the city. Sitting down at a new location with friends and good music? Love it.
Last place I ventured into was called Drom. An intimate little spot, perfect for a relaxing evening with favorites.
A couple things to do during the day–
Visit/look for events at the Morbid Anatomy Library in Brooklyn
While you’re there check out the Brooklyn Botanical Garden
Visit Union Square for wandering/people-watching (also Strand, Forbidden Planet, art vendors)
If you go to Chinatown, try Joe’s Shanghai (for the soup dumplings) and Chinatown Ice Cream Factory
And if you’re nearby there’s Pommes Frites in the east village and il laboratorio del gelato (their flavor list is awesome) in the lower east side
7A at the intersection of 7th St and Avenue A (24 hours like Yaffa)
If you find yourself in Brooklyn my friends’ neighborhood has The Farm on Adderley which does great breakfast: http://www.thefarmonadderley.com/
There are some nice whiskey and beer bars around there too.
Fun things to do right now mostly involve staying the hell indoors as it’s painfully hot during the day. Anyway, fun things to see:
• The rare books room on the third floor of Strand books in Union Square
• Making the staff at Argosy books pull very rare books from the cases for me to fondle.
• Dinner at Veselka followed by desert at Stogo
• Wandering around SoHo and the Lower East Side taking photos of old lettering
• Buying meat and cheese at DiPaolo’s in Litty Italy
• Dirt-cheap weekday Dim Sum lunches at Jing Fong in Chinatown
• Taking rubbings from graveyards like the one outside Old St. Mark’s church, or some of the really old ones in Brooklyn
Rice to Riches and Momofuku, yes definitely.
I also love Congee Village in Chinatown.
The Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park.
Aedes and of course CB I Hate Perfume for scents.
St. Mark’s Bookshop and the takoyaki stand around
the corner from there. Cloisters Cafe is pleasant too,
when the mustang grapes are ripe and fragrant.
The Ukrainian Store on the Lower East Side and
DeVera Objects on Crosby St. Have a great time!
Coney Island 10-in-one sideshow, and Monday Night Magic on Bleecker Street. Circus culture at its East Coast finest :)
It’s already been mentioned a couple of times, but Evolution really is one of the neatest places to stop by in NYC. Also, House of Field.
I usually only get to NYC on business but I try to sneak in some time to shoot and a shopping trip at Century 21 before heading back home on the late train to Providence.
Getting something that is covered in raspberry mole at Mexican Radio. It’s all that I think about when I think of NY.
Visiting Kinokuniya is one of my personal favourite things to do. But I haven’t been to the homelands/north east in so long!
Pssst! Oh yeah, MUJI!!!
You wonderful, helpful, fun-loving explorers! Why you do! I’m only going for a week! Less than a week, even! Yeeee. This incredible list makes me want to visit at least three times next year.
I’m copying and pasting everything into a note-taking software, but as of this moment have NO idea as to which places I’ll visit. Everything sounds so good — THANK YOU, everyone!
I forgot to add “Drinks with Memphis”. I hear he’s a cool guy.
:P
Have a safe flight you two!
I’ll second the recommendation for Joe’s Shanghai. Every time I have visitors (who aren’t vegetarian) I take them for the crab & pork xiao long bao. They are legendary. It’s on Pell Street. There are other locations, but they are not as good.
Bluestockings Books on Allen. Also Housing Works books on Crosby, just south of Houston.
Ess-A Bagel uptown for smoked trout sandwiches on an everything bagel. Far superior to any other bagel I’ve had in NYC.
Taco Mix in Harlem for pernil.
Death & Company or Angel’s Share for drinks.
Black Hound for cake. (Lemon raspberry!) They make works of art. I’m frequently happy just to gaze on them in the window, but once in a while splurge to actually split one of the minis with friends. So good.
NY Central for art supplies.
Governor’s Island just to go. There are always art installations there and the ferry is free.
I enjoyed Jekyll and Hyde

I like buying food from the food stands at every corner, going to Coney Island (their freak show), and I love the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There’s also a Museum of Sex that’s pretty small but fun.
I love going to where CBGB used to be and pay my respects, may that sweet little place R.I.P. The Sidewalk Cafe is always a great place to visit. Great drinks, food, and music. So many cool places. I live(d) in the lower east side, that is the greatest place in the world.
Totally unrelated, but I put one of your stickers on a tiny green moleskine ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/chlorinebeach/4773721203/ ) & it looks totally awesome! I had been hanging on to this for a while, so I’m glad it looks so good.
Also, I cannot wait for the event on Saturday! It will be my first Sketchy’s ever. :)
