Mmmf 002 – Quinoa-stuffed Squash

The sun has come out in LA after a solid week of glorious rain, much to my chagrin. Fortunately, it’s still cold enough to crave winter food, so I’m going to share a simple recipe for a quinoa-stuffed squash. It’s takes about 30 minutes to prepare and is easy to modify to make vegetarian. You will need: 1 butternut squash 1 cup quinoa a protein of your choice dried cranberries walnuts or cashews butter cinnamon cumin coriander honey You’ll notice …

Reader Feedback of the Year

WAVE air station control tower crew, 1954 I’m not in the habit of publishing letters from my readers, but in the case of this morning’s correspondence, I felt compelled, and  I promise it’s not to let you know that people like my blog. Reason being the grand-scale transformation of the author – I was moved to tears when I read this email and think it absolutely belongs here as an end-of-the-year spur to stop making excuses and Get It Done. …

Photo Flurry 056 – Latex, Mother, Dog

I’m staring down the gaping maw of a monstrous to-do list and my brain is completely overrun with travel plans, the Wikileaks situation, and dancing squirrels, so no words today. However, the incomparable Allan Amato sent over a bunch of images from our early autumn shoot, so, voila! Everything from my standard supervillainous self to tan-lines and pit bulls. In Mother of London In Blacklickorish Latex More Blacklickorish With Nana, the beautiful hot-chocolate blue-eyed beastie. Latex by Brigitte More,

Style Dispatch 016 – Brr!

Colder days are here in SoCal, which means 60s and 70s F, which also means it’s safe to dust off hats, sweaters and my beloved arsenal of arm-warmers. This might sound hilarious to those of you living in four-season climates, but believe me, after ten years in LA you’d be spending your “winter” days wrapped up Eskimo-style, too. Or close to it. No jacket here, because this was a warmer day! And so: COMPONENTS Knit hat – mine is from …

Inkdrops 017: Sneak Preview of Travis Louie Collab

Technically this isn’t an “Inkdrop”, but we have more important things to focus on. As just announced over at Coilhouse, I have a piece in Travis Louie’s epic collaborative art show, The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories. Here is a super-secret previous of mine and Travis’ collaboration, titled “Cosmic Dreams”. Travis is on a plane right now and can’t punish me for showing it to you. Yet. Other collaborations include work by Craola, Chet Zar, Lola, Fred Harper, my …

Blush Response 017: Dying Sections of Very Long Hair

The crimson-locked siren below is my friend, Stephanie Inagaki. Stephanie is an artist and head designer of coveted jewelry label, Miyu Decay. Stephanie has very, very, very long hair. A few weeks ago she called me up and asked if I could dye it red. All of it. I laughed, hung up, caught my breath and called back, saying that I’ll dye some of it, but that’s the best I can offer. So we got to work and took a …

Inkdrops 016 – All Dissociation Styles Now Available!

After a few weeks of technical tweaking and bug-ironing, all three styles of my Dissociation T-shirts are now available over at Wiloh, just in time for the holidays. It’s safe to say that I’m pretty excited. When I opened the box of my sample T-shirts, a little wave of relief washed over me – they turned out to be AWESOME. I have to hand it to the shirt elves at Wiolh – they picked a truly incredible material and superior …

Photo Flurry 055 – Getting Tattooed at Tribulation, NYC

This summer, I went to NYC where, in addition to having adventures with Molly and Sam, I also finally got my upper back tattoo finished by the talented Tm Kern, after getting it started back in 2005. Though this was the third time Tim tattooed me, it was the first session we had on his home turf. Tim’s shop, Tribulation Tattoo, is filled to the roof with art and taxidermy, so Samantha snapped away while patiently waiting the entire three-and-a-half …

Blush Response 016 – Blazing Eyes

Continuing the recent red theme, here is a fiery eye shadow look I did over the weekend for the Jessica Joslin opening reception at La Luz De Jesus gallery. At a glance, it’s somewhat similar to the Strung Out look from a earlier this year, but this is actually much warmer and a little more complex. This is a dramatic look that incorporates four different eyeshadow colors, but it’s actually pretty easy to execute. We start out with a bright …

Blush Response 015 – 10-Minute Bruises

A few years ago, I worked as a professional make-up artist. My passion was for special effects, and every once in a while I get to play with the skills I learned in those days. This year, I was too busy to plan a Halloween costume. Originally I wanted to dress as Pris from Blade Runner, then realized that Hot Topic no longer sells micro-mesh tops and didn’t have enough time to investigate further. Fail. However, since I was going …

Photo Flurry 053: David J Haskins

Four of the several photos I shot of David J at The Standard hotel downtown, for the interview Mer conducted this summer. The full shabang is up on Coilhouse today. An excerpt from the intro: … for now, he’s holding court at our corner table, and he’s got Zo and I doubled over in helpless fits of laughter. As our cackling reaches a crescendo, fellow patrons look up from their $20 cheeseburgers in confusion. Perhaps this pale, slim, soft spoken …

Photo Flurry 052: Skingraft at LAFW

Still busy, however! Last week, Clint Catalyst and I jumped into a rented Escalade, zoomed downtown, haphazardly strapped Clint into a chain harness [these things are unrelated], and attended what was likely LA Fashion Week’s best night: the Ashton Michael, Skingraft, and Anthony Franco triple threat show. Coverage here, a few pictures below, and more after the jump. Do enjoy! The upstairs lobby of the gorgeous LA Stock Exchange was transformed into a glowing bar, serving up popcorn, tiny cupcakes, …

Sketch by Cameron Stewart

This is all kinds of great: a drawing by Eisner-winning artist Cameron Stewart, who was kind enough to send me the hi res [on advice of A at NYCC]. It’s based on this photo of me by Allan Amato from a couple of years back. Love! You can see more of Cameron’s stuff here: http://cameronstewart.blogspot.com/
