Good morning, universe.
In just four short days I’ll be cramming my cargo into a little rocket and zooming off to Yantaló. The pile of books and supplies at my front door has gone from this:
…to this:
On Monday, I’ll do my best to post photos of the contents. it’s time for some serious suitcase Tetris! And maybe more prickly pear juice.
LA is filled with all manner of cactus and this fruit is fairly easy to find in parks and stores alike. Some troublesome varieties, however, are exceptionally difficult to juice because their delicate pulp is loaded with hard seeds – one literally has to mash the stuff in a net strainer to achieve the above result.
While it was worth it, as soon as A and I drank the delicious results, I embarked on a search for a bottled version – somehow to no avail. If anyone here is in the know, please share.
Amidst the D4RT prep, I’ve been whipping the house into shape. It had fallen into considerable disarray while I was busy and it just so happens that, two days after my return from Peru, my mother-in-law is coming to visit for the first time from the Czech Republic. Besides, I don’t come home to a mess if I can help it.
We’ve rearranged the bedroom as part of this process, and purchased my very first [!] dining table, which isn’t here yet.
There were a few moments to visit with friends, too. One is a skilled mixologist and blew my mind with a masterly array of what I affectionately call “old man drinks”.
It’s science!
We also went to FYF, got long-overdue Thai massages, watched lots of movies in bed and spent time with Micron. I got trip vaccinations which made my arm feel like lead for 24 hours, shot a few SG sets and did some other stuff, some of which was documented in the field.
And last, but certainly not least, I have officially reached hair nirvana, thanks to Vivka’s dyeing skills. She did such an incredible job that the process will receive its own post when I have the time. I leave you with this.
Eeee!
SO TRUE about not coming home to a messy place! My mother taught me that lesson well…
I can’t imagine how excited you must be getting about your trip! Can I ask though…are you at all nervous about being away Ales and Micron for it? I’m such a homebody, that sort of thing always comes to the forefront for me!
ohmygod SHOES. Where did you get those divine wedges from?
and I’m exactly the same about coming home to a clean house. I was at a festival last weekend and the house was spotless when I left.
Awmanz. You have me reminiscing…
My mother, some 13 or so years ago, used to work on a cactus farm right down the road from our home. She would bring home all sorts of tasty jellies and spreads and pickled cacti and the “tunas” or the little red buds that usually bloom into yellow flowers. Those were delicious times.
I know down here in Texas, we have cactus sold pretty much everywhere, but I’ve yet to see someone selling the juice in a bottle. The only thing I’ve seen is a margarita mix that’s made from actual prickly pear.
I’ll keep an eye out at the farmer’s markets, and if I see something I’ll snatch a bottle up for ya. P;
Whitney – verrrry excited over here, yes!! And no – I’d rather conserve my energy for the work at hand rather than expend it on worry, yanno? Seems more constructive.
Heather – the sparkle-shoes were maybe $17 in the downtown fashion district!
Rayne – please! And thank you! Though, considering I have scoured the internet and found nothing, I’m skeptical of the wonderjuice’s very existence.
Have you checked Follow Your Heart or Lassen’s for the juice? Those seem like the places that would be most likely to have it. I’d check myself but I don’t live in SoCal any more :(
Are you or Ales reading LAIKA?
I loved it! Especially the note from the original scientist as the afterward. AWESOME. Anyways.
Good luck in Yantalo! I can’t wait to read about your journey and how the adventure turns out.
It just occurred to me to ask; Are you going to be bringing/wearing any make-up?
If so what are you taking!?
&hearts.
Dave – thank you, I’ll check them out!
Keighter – thanks and YES! I love Laika so much, and Ales does, as well.
Gwendolyn – yep, I’ll be bringing make-up! For eye shadow I’m taking my colorful Sugarpill palette as well as a few neutral shades, liquid eyeliner, waterproof mascara, Bare Escentuals mineral makeup, lip gloss, and maybe one lipstick, just in case. And, of course, lots of sunscreen, make-up remover wipes and cotton swabs.
The Yantaló climate is very humid and dusty, so I won’t know how much I can actually get away with until I’m there. My guess is I’ll be keeping things very minimal.
Your post just reminded me I need to whip my apartment in to shape. My fiance is a human hurricane.
You have to be stoked for your trip. Be safe and have tons of fun.
And lastly, your hair looks amazing. The coloring is beautiful.
Enjoy Yantalo!
And the hair is love.
Beautiful hair! I’m so jealous- I’m looking for a job and can’t dye my hair blue-green like I want to. It sucks.
Also, those embroidered shoes are amazing. I’d love a pair but I’m sure they don’t make them in Size Gargantuan. XD
Safe travels! <3
MY GOD, THE HAIR.
So. Insanely. Awesome.
love you, adore the new hair, and absolutely can’t wait for more news!!!
