It’s a busy January, between finishing paintings for this Saturday’s reception, working on interviews and photos for ChinaShop, drawings for tattoo commissions and a pinup for Occupy Comics. I’ve also started Spring cleaning early – a few fancies are out on eBay as we speak.
On Monday, I managed to escape the toil and spend a day with my mom.
I love, LOVE ramen. Real Japanese ramen, not the packaged dry sort, and I finally introduced mom to this magical concoction. We had beef curry ramen and pork soy ramen. Mff!
We didn’t have any. I actually despise doughnuts, though I do love bacon.
This happens a lot. When people threaten women that they’ll become their mothers, it should be clarified that it actually means they’re going to constantly dress alike without conspiring to. My mom is wearing an AllSaints coat. Frf.
MOCA is hosting an amazing exhibit right now – Naked Hollywood: Weegee in LA. It’s a massive retrospective of the NYC-crime-scene-photographer-turned-LA-paparazzi who captured some of the most iconic images of the early 20th century. If you’re in town, I highly recommend it. We were enthralled for hours.
There is also a Kenneth Anger exhibition, which we didn’t have much time for, though we did watch an excerpt from Lucifer Rising. I’ll be going back soon.
It was a fun afternoon. I took this self portrait later that evening:
I’ve been collecting them here, if you’re interested.
I had THE BEST ramen in Japan. My sister lives there and has become quite the connoisseur so she took me to the best of her finds. It seems it was all I wanted to eat but the best one I had was a salt flavored broth (shio) with pork slices, and I shit you not, it had a slice of butter in it. OMG. Sinfully delicious. If you ever have the opportunity to try the salt/butter combo I highly recommend it.
So glad I took a photo of it!

OMG I LOVE Weegie! I am sure that exhibit is killer (ha), I’ve never seen any of his work in person. Wish I was going to be in L.A. soon.
BTW, I love ramen too. I went to a real ramen place in Honolulu when I was there for work. The Japanese just do noodle soups the best, for my money. :)
Ivonne – me too! When Daniel and I went a few years ago, we scarfed down some serious amazingness, though that trip was definitely more sushi-centric. Next time – RAMEN. By the way, you can totally add butter to your ramen at the place we ate this week. I resisted. Barely.
Louise, it’s an incredible exhibit, but it only focuses on his work in Hollywood – none of the crime scene stuff is on display. Still huge and hugely entertaining. He was really a genius in his own right. Have you seen any of his kaleidoscope photos?
Hawaiian ramen?! I’m on a mission now.
Zo – I’ve been a reader for years and I could say all of the things I’m thinking (endless inspiration, brain expanding, future building, expanding personal feminism, true love [what? I know!]) that you provide me with on the daily, but there is only one thing I long to say: I love how much you love your mom. The first photo of you guys here made me burst into tears because it’s one of the first times in my life I’ve seen someone’s love for their mom feel like my own. Of course this is from a total outside perspective and I know nothing of you and your mother really, but dayum. That shit just made my day. Thanks for being the best everything, always. You have no idea how much it’s making me be my best. xo
Complete ditto to what Alex said. And I’ve also noticed that whole dressing alike thing. It’s gotten to the point now that I don’t know if my young, hip (HA!), trend-aware fashion is influencing my mom’s, or if her classic, all black-and-gray aesthetic is rubbing off on me…
ai! Ramen in Japan is AMAZZZZINNNGG. I have good advice on places to go to…….<_<
You DESPISE donuts?! I…I don’t even know what to think anymore…
I wish I had the $$ for that red velvet dress… So gorgeous!
Alex and Whitney – you guys are so sweet that you made ME get a little verklempt. THANKS A LOT.
Seriously though, thanks. I’m overwhelmed and bad at accepting/responding to such stuff, so just know that your words make a huge impact.
<3 x 100!
Stephanie – [drool]
Dave – I do. Just gross!
Holly, it’s still a pretty good deal! Maybe you could snag it last-minute. If not, more stuff is coming, eventually.
Oh I would love to go to those exhibits. I need me some art, some inspiration.
I love the self-portrait, as usual. The nails! So pretty!
