I’ve owed you a proper makeup tutorial for a long time now, and when this beautiful package from Sugarpill arrived this week, I had no excuses left. My friend Amy just launched this new make up line, and reviews have been popping up like happy spring berries all over the ‘wub. I thought about waiting a little while until the furor simmered down a bit, but after rummaging through the box and being mesmerized by the colors and variety, I decided to go for it, man. Just look at this stuff!
Of course, adorable packaging doesn’t necessarily for a good product make, so I was really looking forward to giving Sugarpill a go. Last night I was meeting an out-of-town friend at The Edison – my favorite place in the world. The atmosphere there is dark and full of magic, especially on a less-crowded and relatively yuppie-free Wednesday night, so I got a little dolled up for the occasion.
Red eyeshadow has been my favorite alternative to black since high school, so when I saw Love, the deepest, perfect crimson pressed shadow, in my Sugarpill package, I did not hesitate. With Love set aside, I gathered the rest of my ammunition and went into battle.
- Royal Sugar – a gorgeous and glittery rich blue loose eyeshadow
- Decora – a sparkling pink loose eyeshadow
- Asylum – a shimmery red
- Tiara – a stunning, glittery silver
- Pressed Eyeshadow Palette
Until now, I have been a little apprehensive about loose powder eyeshadows, but those days are done. I used these both wet and dry, and was happy with the results. Didn’t have any mixing medium on hand, so I used a drop of water for the product around my eyes, and a little bit of body shimmer gel to mix the blue with for my brows.
The breakdown below may look a little complicated at first, but I assure you, this doesn’t have to take much longer than your usual routine if you prepare everything you’ll use ahead of time.
- Used a dry angle brush to fill in the inner ends of my eyebrows with Royal Sugar, then, for a sharper look, mixed the shadow with a little body shimmer gel, and used the same brush to paint the outer ends.
- Loaded a cheap-o sponge applicator with Love, and distributed evenly it all over my lids, blending out and up. I also used a bit under the eyes.
- With Decora on the other side of the applicator, I continued to blend Love out, all around the eye.
- Dabbed Tiara with a small wet brush on the inner corners of my eyes, then blended it out with more Tiara, this time dry. I can’t sing enough praises to this stuff, it’s so pretty.
- With a small, wet blending brush applied a line of Asylum, under my eyes only.
- Used matte white from the palette to highlight the brow.
- Did my usual cat eye with Prestige liquid liner and added a bit under the eye, at the outer edges and along the water line.
- My mascara of choice has been L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black for years and years. It’s amazing, buildable, and inexpensive.
- With a blush brush, dabbed and blended a bit of Tiara to highlight my cheekbones.
- With the same brush, used Decora as blush.
- Dusted my face with Prestige’s Skin Loving Minerals powder foundation. It’s half the price of Bare Escentuals and more matte, so I decided to try it. Haven’t researched it properly just yet, so I can’t recommend it officially, but I do really like it.
- And finished it all off with lip gloss from Smashbox.
Ta-Da!
This is just a fraction of the looks to come, but so far I am 100% into Sugarpill. I can’t wait to play with yellow and gold and green and, and and…! More tutorials to come as time allows.
Wow, I wish my eyeliner would look anywhere near that! I love the colour of the eyeshadows & they look great on you!
i really like how electric the blue looks there on ya!
Hilde, The Prestige liners’ applicators are really helpful in getting a perfect edge!
Lumi, thank you – I’m so in-love with that color. I think I’ll be using it on my brows often, especially if I can find some proper mixing medium.
Love the look you put together! Many are afraid of red eyeshadow but you sure know how to pull it off!
Simple but very, very pretty. What foundation & powder are you wearing here?
I want! I want! I want!
I have been searching for the perfect red eyeshadow for years, but have never been able to find one I like.
How was the staying-power of the pigment throughout the day?
i love how you blended the colours. very nice vibrant red/pink with the sparkles of a pearl-esque glitter corner on the eyes. great tutorial as well :]]
oh crap, more stuff for my ‘want’ list… thanks a lot, zoe! :P let me know how the Prestige’s Skin Loving Minerals powder foundation is…i’m almost out of the bare escentuals. cheaper and better = win!
Hey, Jennifer! Happy you dig the look. I think red is easier to pull off with thick black liner, like here. Personally though, I really love the way it looks on its own, too.
MarkeeCoco – I’m only wearing the Prestige Skin Loving minerals powder foundation I mentioned, nothing else,
Jayne Riot – it stayed on all night and well after, but I did use a finishing spray all over my face, so I’m not 100% sure how it would hold up on its own. My guess is very well, though. Pressed, pigment-heavy shadows generally tend to stay put.
I love the Prestige stuff, Rickie, I’m just not entirely sure of of its ingredients and haven;t had time to research.
I like it. It’s very patriotic :) And I love the shape of your brows.
Great look! I just got ‘Absinthe’ and ‘Lumi’ loose shadows, now looking for an excuse to use them! :)
Wow. Those colors are so bold and gorgeous. I want to try my hand at the red…hopefully it’ll show as brightly.
I love those eyeglasses. I have been shopping for a new pair myself, do you happen to recall where the frames came from?
I agree with Lumi, that blue is amazing on you. And the reds! i can’t sing enough praises about asylum and love! i just got mine from amy yesterday and beyond impressed with sugarpill so far. it’s been pretty exciting to see all the wonderful pictures you and everyone else has posted using it.
ZO…thank you thank you thank you. 1st: because your makeup is always superb and delicious. please…more tutorials in your future. yes. and 2nd: for introducing me to the Edison. I have been to Skoobys because you said the fries were yummers. Indeed they were. I have yet to try Urth Cafe but will soon.
I just emailed Amy to ask about how to use Love+ and she sent me your link. I’m officially purchasing it. Thanks for this look – it’s ahh-mazing on you! (Hopefully on me too!)
This is freaking gorgeous. Love the red eyeshadow. I think I kind of need it.
Just wondering- why do you prefer to put the foundation on last?
Also, for anyone worried about the staying power of shadows, I highly recommend checking out Urban Decay primer potion. It rocks. I have super oily lids and this makes eyeshadow always stay put for me.
Wow, she’s the one behind Shrinkle as well?! I loooove Shrinkle!
anyways, I’m just totally into this make-up thanks for the tutorial *.*
Could you please do a special party make-up for redheads? I have a vibrant, almost orange copper-red hair at the moment, and I wonder what would you suggest. You just have to try the other colours of your sugarpill set as well, right? ;D
@Zo On the topic of mixing medium for turning powder into something suitable for sharp brows, have you tried UD’s Eyeshadow Transforming Potion? On the rare occasion that I don’t do my brows with a blue pencil (what? I’m lazy in the mornings, sheesh.) this works a treat with loose or pressed powders.
.Typhoid and Brook – I have not tried either of these UD products, mostly because I’ve shunned loose eye shadows for so long but I bet that’s exactly what I need to work with my Sugarpill loos pgments – thanks for pointing me in that direction.
Lenore, I’ll definitely give it a go at some point – I had read hair on many occasions in the past, so it should be a breeze.
Maxienne – than you!
Zombeena – The Edion is truly the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. Jut try to go there on a Wednesday night for your first time, and make sure there aren’t any events going down – it’s so much better when it’s uncrowded.
Yume Ninja – yess, this means you must post some pics of your own!
You look beautiful. I am also a big fan of red around the eyes. All those colors look amazing. Thank you for this post!
Looks very awesome! I too love the red around the eyes. And it’s so cool that you made your brows purple!
Have you ever tried any Lime Crime makeup or Miss X?
gorgeous!
What finishing spray did you use? The biggest tragedy with make-up is when it creases or wears off, and I HATE feeling like I have to carry liner and pots of shadow around with me for touch-ups!
I’ve always been afraid of red eye shadow because I have a rather red skin tone, but this shade is so lovely that I really may give it a go…
Subtle, lovely, and striking. Your out of town friend must have loved it quite a lot. :)
what shade of lipgloss is that? I like it!

I love the idea of putting the blue into your eyebrows… very cool! And awesome glasses btw!
I love this!! You look amazing!
Zoetica: I F&*$&%ing ADORE your glasses! What brand are they, where can I score them?
love your eyebrows. i find it hard to make my black brows look the actual colour i put on them, do you lighten them or anything first? they are so cool. i usually use a more magenta colour to match my bright pink hair, but love that shade you used. will definitely try that too. lovin the rest of your make up too. i’m ba big fan of red eyeshadow.
I love how you put it on so beautifully.
You’re very talented. (:
I loved this look and I love your hair!!!. I’ve been thinking of dying my hair blue but not a shocking kind of blue. I’ve been looking for a softer one and when I saw your hair in this picture I super loved it. Would you mine telling me what brand you use to dye your hair. If you could email me back I’ll appreciate it so much. :-)
I LOVE your glasses!!!! the makeup is Gorgeous but the glasses got me swooning over here!!! :)

Saw this linked to the Sugarpill site, and I’m really in awe! Your makeup is flawless, you’re lovely, and your hair is beautiful! (what is that color, SFX Wildflower?)
I’m also curious what finishing spray you use, because I have issues with makeup, especially eye makeup, fading on me as the day goes on.
AMAZING! You did a wonderful job!
hey! your gorgeous! what is the brand of your glasses????
Where did you get your frames? Or what brand are they or both! I LOVE them.
You have shined my way to a perfect red – I’ve been looking for one for ages.
I hate the human race terribly when people repost others stuff as their own with NO credit to the author. So I’m narking on them. Here is Zoe’s tutorial used by someone else. (she even used your pics).
