December, with its new year’s eve and the preceding lunar eclipse was immensely, eerily transformative, so much so it surprised even me. I spent much of the month away from work, sorting things out, cleaning, and filling pages of my Moleskine, laying out plans and cataloging everything the past year effectuated. New Year’s eve itself was an awakening experience. Now, after nearly a month of reflection and plotting, I’m armed and ready to take 2011 in top form. Rarrf! This means maintaining optimal performance, so read on as I share some of my daily brain-zapping methods amidst photos taken around the house.
Breakfast
For me, as for most free agents, Getting It Done always means Discipline, yes, with a capital D. Working on a minimum of four separate projects at any given time means a schedule optimized for health, energy, and super brain function. These are essential if one is to have a work day that’s exciting, fulfilling, and still ends, leaving enough time to be ALIVE.
I remember days when I would work from the moment I woke up to the time I went to sleep, barely moving and surviving on RedBull and Cheetos. This is no way to live, comrades. Ever since I left SGHQ in 2009, I’ve been perfecting my daily ritual, finding and implementing methods that wouldn’t just wake me up, but keep me zesteh until bedtime. There is always more to discover, but here is how I do right now:
Some of this year’s planned reading, antique veterinary syringe
Vintage medical guide, spooky doll head, one of my paintings
1. Meditation. Ideally, I meditate in the morning before I get out of bed. This sets me into motion for the rest of the day. If I can, I do it again in the afternoon.
A couple of years ago, I read David Lynch’s “Catching the Big Fish“, where he talks extensively about the ways meditation changed his life. Slowing down and clearing my head has always been massively challenging, but this was the book that finally inspired me to Do It.
2. Exercise. In Russia, morning exercise is called “Zaryadka“, which loosely translates to “Charging-up”. I live by this concept, beginning the day with a 10 to 20-minute workout. This is usually ten minutes of cardio, 40 sit-ups, 20 pushups, and whatever else I feel like doing. Sometimes I power-walk with the dog. Sometimes I blast dubstep and dance around the house like a hellbeast. Anything that gets my blood pumping and makes me feel good works just fine.
I also do additional sit-ups or push-ups between each project. It’s an effective way to boost my energy and reset my brain for the next thing.
Exactly what it looks like
3. Food! I often talk about rejecting processed food on here, so I’ll spare you the lecture. One thing I’ve found in recent days is that eating carbs, processed sugar, or anything resembling cereal in the morning makes me groggy and lazy. I try to have at least three components to my breakfast, and to snack on fruit and nuts during the day to keep the powahh flowing. And I’m assuming we all know about taking vitamins and drinking tons of water, so I’ll spare you that lecture, too. However! There are certain foods that actually increase your brain function. My favorites are:
- Wild Salmon – [has to be wild] Essential Fatty Acids (like Omega-3), and the lowest levels of mercury and other bad stuff
- Yellowfin Tuna – more Omega-3
- Blueberries – antioxidants galore
- Sweet potatoes – full of B6!
- Matcha – can be pricey, but well worth it, because matcha is stuffed with all sorts of amazing stuff. Vitamins such as C and A, antioxidants, catechins, and L-Theanine are all here.
- Flax seeds – choline
- Olive Oil – choline
- Coffee, and I’m not talking about big fat caramel-sugar-lard concoctions here. Have an espresso or take some good beans, grind ’em up and brew yourself a fresh cup every once in a while – coffee beans [and cacao beans!] are full of amino acids, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

4. Sunlight, and I certainly don’t mean tanning. I open all the curtains the moment I get out of bed, and try to work in front of a window. Did you know that sunlight stimulates things like appetite and metabolism? It does! It also improves the immune system, circulation, increases production of your red blood cells , endorphins, and your serotonin. UNF. Sunlight balances hormones and can help with some symptoms of PMS. It will help you sleep better at night, too, because sunlight stimulates the production of melatonin. Need I say more?
5. Planning. After breakfast, I write out a time table for my tasks, and try to stick with it. For me, this is the only way to stay on track and make sure everything gets attention. I don’t limit this to workstuff, either – there are more important things in life, as it turns out.

This makes me excited to start life anew.
An interesting and well-illustrated post, but I must offer two very minor corrections:
* there is no neurotransmitter known as “ceratonin”; it sounds as if you mean “serotonin”, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of well-being and happiness amongst other roles;
* melatonin is a hormone secreted by the pineal gland whose levels are inhibited by sunlight, not stimulated by it. Melatonin secretion increases in response to low light intensity (darkness), and thus has a key role in the regulation of your sleep cycle.
No offence is intended, of course, only the delivery of correct information.
this is very inspiring!
I second Mary’s emotions. I woke up this morning for my new job feeling terribly unhealthy and just…well, terrible. After downing a bowl of cereal and a Red Bull, I still felt bad. Awake, yes, but genuinely BAD. So! As cliche as it is, I do find that a new year is an ideal time to pump yourself up and change the things you’d like to. This post further pushed that notion into my temples.
PS: I’ve read a bit of Catching the Big Fish, and just the few first pages peaked my interest in meditating for at least 40 minutes a day.
Agreed! Very inspiring. I’m dying to try meditation in the morning, if I have time. I feel like this blog post of yours is a breath of fresh air for 2011.
so what’s for breakfast?
Very nice post, Zoetica. I’m working on getting better at using my time and energy and this post is an inspiration. Nice to see I’m not the only one who found David Lynch’s book and all he wrote about meditation very interesting. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time but I’ve never wrote a comment, I’m trying to be more social and communicative this year so here I am. Have a nice 2011. :)
Annah – <3 at your FACE!
Mary – Yess!
Typhoid – of course I meant serotonin, thanks for catching my typo!
I have to point out that without sunlight, our pineal glands don’t get the stimulation they require to produce melatonin at sunset. My point is that sunlight and melatonin production are directly linked, so I stand by my statement.
Amanda Louise – thank you!
Hannah, I’m tellin’ you – carbs are SO slug-inducing. Try a different breakfast and take your caffeine in small doses – you’ll see a massive difference. Preface breakfast with 20 jumping jacks and you’re golden.
Are you keeping a meditation log, by chance? That’s one thing I want to start doing that I haven’t yet.
Holly – thank you! There is a lot of regenerative UMPH in he air right now and I don’t think it’s just the New Year psychology at work.
Marz – that’d be scrambled eggs with smoked paprika, sliced watermelon and blue cheese, and black currant tea to drink.
The Generalist – welcome, thank you for leaving your first comment! I thought that book was inspiring and a pleasure to read.
What did you do when you worked at SGHQ? I mean, possibly you had a 9-5 schedule or something similar.
My point is, I work in an office and I have the option to work from home when needed. However, when I do that, I find myself more distracted and can’t even get some other things done (in this case, projects outside the office). I find it even harder to start or finish projects not related to my work and that can be frustrating some times.
I know it’s all about Discipline, but it’s quite difficult when trying to cope with a regular job and personal projects not related to it (I know, I should quit my job!).
Love your routine and I can’t wait to know what happened in New Year’s Eve and what this 2011 will bring for Zo!
Nice post; I love reading about people’s rituals.
I am pretty good about all these things; I have to be to work from home. I would love to read that David Lynch book to hear what meditation did for him as it has helped me tremendously.
Love Love Love this post! I’m always facinated to see what sort of people do on a daily basis!
I’m trying to get back into a decent routine for my daily life (tough for me sometimes, I work the very awkward hours of 12:30-6pm outside of my house). But it includes a lot of the similar things – a lot of tea, blueberries at breakfast and working on my fiction in front of a nice open window. By the time 6pm rolls around I want nothing more than to laze around and read, so, getting up early and getting on the right path is important!
<3 here's the new year!
This is essentially, the perfect blog post. At least as it pertains to my life in this moment.
I spent last year feeling like I was constantly drowning, breaking surface and then drowning again. Once the safety net of a corporate career was gone and I was left to pursue my passions uninhibited I honestly believed that life would be a party! Turns out having the structure of a desk job was what kept me level and as such Ive spent a lot of time playing catch up to my own tasks and feeling completely unorganized.
Exercise, organization and alloted time for relaxation are Exactly what my life needs and are major goals in the new year. I think I will be taking a few pages from your book Zoetica!
Wonderful post.
I’ll fully admit that I eat way too much crap and should definitely exercise more- something I’m looking to improve in the new year.
But after years of just… so much crap, I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I found a great job at a salon with an amazing group and a wonderful energy- after months of being terrified of ending up at another chain, you can imagine how happy this makes me!
This is the first time I’ve looked forward to the new year, and it feels amazing.
Hello!
yours and gala’s post on morning routine are inspiring, I feel I, too, need a change!
How do you eat your sweat potato in the morning? do you have a recipe to share?
thanks!
I read your response when I woke up this morning and took your advice. Twenty jumping jacks then a banana with sips of Red Bull. Haha. I’ll need more to eat, but I do feel better so far.
No meditation log but wouldn’t hurt to keep one. I received a Moleskine journal for Christmas and that’d be perfect to use as a log.
Thanks, Zo!
This post got me excited about the new year. I do need to change a lot of habits. Thanks for all the sound advice!
A very optimistic way to start off this year.
i love this post…meditation, healthy eats & exercise WORKS. as a mother of a toddler & part-time bar owner, i wouldn’t get by without it.
another healthy habit i’ve learned is one picked up while living here in the Mediterranean. it’s the custom to eat fresh fruit(usually an orange, pineapple or grapes) as dessert right after eating.
apart from being a healthy habit, it has a good cleansing effect on the body especially after eating a heavy meal.
old people here are amazingly active compared to their American counterparts. you can see the effects of something as simple as walking has in a population; people are leaner & age much better because of all the daily walking required to run errands here.
mucho amor & feliz año nuevo desde mallorca!
what kind of dubstep do you listen to to make you dance around lke a wildbeast?, Please can you suggest some american dubstep as t doesn’t sound like that here, unless you mix it with jungle
Hell yes, dubstep is myyy shit.
I’m curious to know what hour do you get up!
I used to either oversleep or have a few hours of rest. Am sleeping 8 hours and getting out of bed around 6am now and greatly enjoy the calm and the ritual of preparing for the day when everything is mostly silent still.
So, what do you think about sleep/get up time?
I really enjoyed this article! Very inspirational.
At the moment I’m living off a diet of fast food and carbonated drinks and I totally feel it taking its toll on me and my work.
Thanks for sharing.
nice post!
aww, mind-expending business are always so perfect for NYE, starting a new cycle :)
love this post – i make a pretty mean breakfast smoothie based on your original avocado/honey/soy milk combo, adding crushed flaxseeds, a spoonful of flaxseed oil and a big heaped teaspoon of matcha powder…. worth trying just to chuckle at the insane greenness, and you feel like you can take on anything after.
