Closer to a coffee-table book than a disposable periodical, Coilhouse Magazine was billed as “A love letter to alternative culture”. We covered fearless forms of art, music, fashion, film, technology and literature – from sci-fi and punk rock, to fringe fashion and green technology. The daily-updated Coilhouse blog served as a global, grassroots community for artists, thinkers, makers and doers.
As co-founding editor, I functioned as curator, writer, project manager, photographer and illustrator, in addition to designing the majority of our merchandise.
I wrote original articles about everything from rejecting the mundane and fashion as armor, to finding (and falling in love with) the oases between LA’s freeways – in addition to almost three hundred blog posts and assorted introductions to print features. I also managed numerous editorials and photo shoots, with wandering through Clive Barker’s sprawling home studio and the invasion of Wil Wheaton’s home to photograph him and his priceless D&D collection among memorable experiences. You can have a look at some of the features and interviews I facilitated in the gallery below:
To create the Coilhouse brand, I contributed over twenty original illustrations and merchandise designs, including branded clothing, home wares and accessories. My “Stratosphere Messenger” illustration from Issue 1 became the Coilhouse mascot for years to come, making appearances on T-shirts, posters and stickers. Offering up the poster design for free download lent this space-age poster-girl to all manner of street art applications worldwide. The Coilhouse slogan, “Inform/Inspire/Infect”, and the “Electric C” logo are among my other branding contributions.
