I’ve been craving remote nature. Lately, all I want to do is read, paint, and be far from civilized society, out amidst trees and rocks and open sky. Driving through the Italian, and then French, countryside last month drove this notion further out to the top layers of my brain box, and I’m not sure whether it’s a new wave of misanthropy or a side effect of summertime. Maybe it’s because I’ve spent my entire life in big cities [Moscow, Chicago, LA], and associate rural life with being a kid at my parents’ dacha, stealing raspberries from neighbor’s yards, convincing other kids I’m a space alien and use my necklace as a communication device, playing with happy, fat stray dogs, building late-night campfires. Or it could be that I’ve overdosed on culture, and am in dire need of a sabbatical. That’s probably it.
These theories are all, if course, in direct opposition with my love of shiny futurestuff, of which I’m well aware, but they can’t be helped. They’re also perfectly in tune with the Artist’s Cycle, as I understand it. I made this chart to demonstrate:
Fortunately, there are places all around LA that make for excellent day-tripping, while we decide whether we should actually move somewhere with more trees and less people in a year or two, or I figure out a financially sound way to take that sabbatical. Here are some photos from a few hours spent wandering around a big park, eating vegetarian Reuben sandwiches, reading comics, and getting dirty. There is also a panorama. You can see the Hollywood sign if you look closely.
Having grown up in the woods (basically) and forced to live in a more urban area now that I’m a young professional-type, all I can say when I have similar dilemmas myself is: “THANK GOD FOR THE INTERNET.” I trust that it will enable one to move back to less inhabited places while still maintaining all those professional contacts and interactions (when necessary).
I mean, that’s what I have to believe, anyway.
Mmm might that be the Locali Reuben? SO GEWD.
I feel as if I am in a similar boat. Combine all of that with listening to a lot of Zoe Keating and you have yourself a very intense yearning for a different world.
I miss those little weed/flowers with the yellow buds… we moved south quite a while back and they don’t grow here :(
your chart, it is so brilliantly honest.
It’s the times when the press of humanity weighs on me that I remember and lament the increasing overpopulation of the Earth as it’s becoming more and more difficult to find a place actually away from people.
/introvert’s lament
I have to know what is in a vegetarian reuben. Pretty please share??
thank you.
You should come to Montana for a sabbatical. Only Missoula though – we are the island of fierce blue in the sea of republican red. If you want wilderness it’s five miles from anywhere you are in town, and the art/music scene has been booming lately. The drive up here is astronomically beautiful and staying here is CHEAP compared to California standards. Especially now that summer’s coming (ha….not here yet this far north) there’s tons of stuff….farmers markets, open air concerts, camping, floating down the river in a tube while downing cheap whiskey….Plus almost every hotel in town takes dogs, as we are super dog oriented. In short, we’re a mini-portland and deserve recognition and more visitors, damnit!
your nail polish: what color is that? and who’s it by/from?
Alice – unfortunately, that’s not entirely true for me, because a lot of what I do ties into being in a bit city. For now, anyhow!
AgentD – YES!
Hacky + Alicia – it’s in the air, I tell you. A few of my friends are expressing similar sentiments at the moment, too.
Yume – keen observation of myself and most of my friends helped.
Lori – http://bit.ly/jaoMv7
Alana – I’ve never been to Montana, but you just made a very strong case for Missoula. I meant more like… a cave in a forest in a canyon, but your suggestion is probably more sustainable. I’d love to visit, at the very least!
Alex: Revlon Top Speed, but I can’t remember the name at the moment.
p.s. this is actual wilderness…bears and such….:)
I will not lie – i want to move to a remote(ish) location so I can have my Forest Witch Faerie Cottage and write cyberpunk novels and lay in the grass with my lady, while she complains about bugs or something. (Or me complain about bugs. Because, man, I hate bugs).
These pics are lovely. Do want. Right now.
ah! thank you.
I’m glad you posted this, for the longest time I’ve just been wanting to disappear….from constant sickness, to my entry trip to Florida next week, and a daughter going through the terrible 2’s, my art has been suffering. and inspiration has been minimal at best :(
love the nailpolish! and I’m a vegetarian, those reubens look great :)
