The first half of today was spent perched in the window of a pub in Dublin city center, sampling whiskey and watching the Saint Patrick’s Day parade. Ours was arguably the best seat in the the entire establishment, the whiskey was fantastic, the parade was appropriately ostentatious, and the brisk, twenty-five-minute walk home was the cherry on a perfect afternoon. I took a plethora of photos which you can see below, mostly focusing on costume details and entertaining onlookers. Enjoy!
i love how you captured so many beautiful costumes, faces, reactions! this colourful procession reminds me of the carnival ones here in germany, but i feel like the irish people do it a little bit better :) thank you for showing us what st. patrick’s day in ireland looks like!
Happy you enjoyed these. I had such a great time shooting this today – it was a breeze. So many fun costumes with great attention to detail and so many excited people! So much eye candy all around!
Wondering: which German carnival are you referring to?
The green and black tiger/dragon was my favourite xx
Beautiful pictures. It seems you captured the feeling of being there.
Heather – I wish there were MORE colored smoke and pyrotechnics. Imagine this at night, all lit up!
Sabrina, that’s the best compliment I could get for event photos – thank you!
every year in february the germans celebrate what they call ‘fastnacht’ ( shrovetide ). it’s actually a very old tradition and in every region it’s celebrated differently. it’s the time before the lenten season begins so people mostly whoop it up in those days ;)

i don’t know, it’s also a little bit like the mardi gras processions in new orleans. the core of the festivities, the reason why it’s celebrated is the same.
Your photo of the ginger girl is my favorite, for it tells it all, just look at her eyes. And what coincidence! Did you notice that the word seen in the negative on the steel fence she is clinging on reads ‘smartweld’, as a parallel metaphor of the girl — and a simile for her eyes — with her eyes glued (‘welded’) onto what is happening? Great shots! And no wonder the Irish so lavishly indulge in color on such an occasion, in a climate like that!
I love how you like the color in and on people. Fantastic! I wished for a moment for the ginger to be a promise and that we had been there, with you two.
